Software/Database Developers Required for the Gene Ontology Project
We are currently looking for software engineers to join the Gene
Ontology (GO) Consortium for a one year long project.
The software engineers will have with proficiency in java database
programming and will be responsible for assisting in the redesign of the GO database
schema, API and submission system. The candidates will implement a
database and production pipeline that is integrated with a wide variety of annotation and ontology tools.

The Gene Ontology project is a major bioinformatics initiative with
the aim of making a computable representation of gene and gene product
attributes across multiple species. The project provides an
ontology representing gene product characteristics, and a large body
of annotation data from GO Consortium members, and tools to manage,

The GO consortium is an international collaboration between multiple institutions. These positions are with groups based in Stanford and Berkeley.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a degree in computer science and/or
bioinformatics and proven working experience (3+ years) of database and Java
programming, as well as experience working with large complex databases. The applicants should be comfortable in complex domains, and be familiar with technology such as Hibernate, JDBC, Lucene/SOLR, Servlets, and should possess good relational modeling skills. Experience of working with biological/biomedical databases and the Gene Ontology would be an added strength. For one of the positions, we are specifically looking for a candidate with a background in ontology / semantic web architectures and APIs (for example, the OWL API).
